Eaton introduces IP67 I/O block modules for SmartWire-DT communication system

May 3, 2017 - Eaton is expanding its portfolio of the intelligent wiring and communication system SmartWire-DT with the addition of a range of IP67 I/O block modules. With these modules the power management company can provide machine and system builders the possibility of integrating a larger number of sensors and actuators into a SmartWire-DT line.

Two design sizes permit the connection of up to eight or sixteen sensors or actuators via four or eight M12 connectors. The portfolio includes numerous variants in different versions. Alongside simple input or output modules, there are hybrid modules or freely configurable I/O modules available. Variants with an additional external power supply cater for applications requiring greater power requirements.

In addition to 24 V outputs with 0.5 A, devices with 2 A output current are available; these enable actuators, such as valves, to be triggered directly. If the external voltage supply fails, the communication connection and the status of inputs used are retained, because the energy supply for this is guaranteed via the SmartWire-DT line. Detailed diagnostics support troubleshooting. In addition to overload and short-circuit alerts, the modules signal the status of voltage supply, overload in sensor power supply, as well as necessary sensors that have not been installed to the higher order control.

The portfolio of devices, which can already be connected to SmartWire-DT, ranges inside the control cabinet from command and signal devices, contactors and motor protection switches, modules for fuse monitoring, soft starters, speed starters, frequency converters and fuse switch disconnectors to circuit breakers. Outside the control cabinet, IP67 I/O modules (T-connectors) are available for the connection of individual digital and analogue process signals.

The familiar possibilities of SmartWire-DT also apply for the new block modules: communication with different field bus protocols permits machine builders to connect their systems to different controls. Currently, this is possible via gateways for Profibus-DP, CANopen, Modbus-TCP, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Powerlink, Ethercat and Sercos III. With the aid of SmartWire-DT, users can link up to 99 devices, from simple sensors through to complex circuit breakers, distributed over 600 m to the gateway.

Eaton provides support with planning and initial operation of the SmartWire-DT network by means of the SWD-Assist software.. Placing all of the SmartWire-DT components into operation via the gateway diagnostics interface puts the installed network into operation without connecting the PLC.
