Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA (23 March 2017) – Steve Mustard, an automation consultant and subject-matter expert of ISA and its umbrella organization, the Automation Federation, will be delivering a presentation and participating in a panel discussion at a Smart Manufacturing conference next week in Cleveland, Ohio.
Mustard is featured in an online article—posted by PLASTICSTODAY—that promotes the presentation he will be giving next week at the Advanced Design and Manufacturing conference, to be held 29-30 March at the Huntington Convention Center.
The presentation, “Teaching Old Equipment New Tricks: Tips to Overcome Retrofitting Challenges,” will be held Wednesday, 29 March from 3:30 p.m. – 4 p.m., and will cover:
- The testing of IoT technology compatibility with legacy equipment before making an investment
- The potential downside of maintaining legacy equipment and hybridizing a factory floor
- The value of employing legacy equipment in a system while deploying smart manufacturing processes and strategies that can be scaled up over time
- The security implications of connecting old equipment to new systems
Mustard says he’s speaking on the topic at the conference because he’s observed the many pitfalls and complexities of retrofitting industrial automation systems and equipment.
He reports that manufacturing professionals looking to leverage the advances of manufacturing 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things need to be aware of the ramifications of deploying new solutions in conjunction with legacy equipment. Sometimes, he says, retrofitting increases the risk of industrial cyberattack.
Mustard also will be participating in a panel discussion on “Turning Data into Information Every Part of the Supply Chain Can Use.” The discussion, to be held Wednesday, 29 March from 2:45 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., will consider the following questions:
- What pieces of information will be used?
- Who will be using the data and how will they use it?
- How and where should you install sensors to collect the most beneficial information without overwhelming your workforce or your systems?
- What’s the future of your collected data?
- How do you interpret and correlate machine-driven data to create future business strategies and operation plans?
