Standard VDI/VDE/VDMA 2632 Part 2 on Communication Between Suppliers and Users Has Been Expanded

May 6, 2024 - "The standard VDI/VDE/VDMA 2632 Part 2 is a valuable basis for communication between suppliers and users of machine vision systems, especially for the creation of specifications. The more clearly and unambiguously framework conditions and requirements are specified in a project, the lower the project risk for both sides," said Dr Heiko Frohn, CTO of VITRONIC Dr.-Ing. "I know of no comparable, openly accessible and widely accepted template in this context."

VDI/VDE/VDMA 2632 Part 2

The standard VDI/VDE/VDMA 2632 Part 2 provides information for the creation of a specification sheet for machine vision systems and thus supports communication between suppliers of machine vision systems and users in the project phase. Particular attention was paid to the presentation and description of influencing factors and their effects. This enables the project partners to identify influencing factors at an early stage during the planning phase and to jointly develop optimized solutions that are recorded accordingly in the specifications.

The draft published in May 2024 is a revised version of the 2015 edition. VDI/VDE/VDMA 2632 Part 2 now incorporates the standards for the acceptance of a machine vision system (Part 3) and for testing the classification performance (Part 3.1) and queries the necessary framework conditions in order to transparently define the procedure for acceptance and performance evaluation for both sides and to implement it in a practicable manner. In doing so, the draft standard consistently draws on the terminology of machine vision specified in VDI/VDE/VDMA 2632 Part 1 in 2023. The productive part of the life cycle of a machine vision system only begins with its successful acceptance. The updated standard now provides further key points in order to specify the requirements for the system in operation as comprehensively as possible with regard to design, documentation, operation, maintenance, service and flexibility for new tasks. Comments to the draft can be submitted until 31 July 2024 here.

The role of machine vision in manufacturing

Industrial production processes are characterised by constantly increasing automation and ever higher demands on production quality. In many cases, this is only made possible by the use of machine vision. The manufactured products must be monitored reliably, objectively, as fully automatically as possible and in relation to defined product and quality specifications. Machine vision, with its methods and processes for production automation, automatic visual inspection and non-contact measurement technology, is an important component here.

About VDMA Machine Vision

The VDMA represents 3,600 German and European mechanical and plant engineering companies. The industry stands for innovation, export orientation and SMEs. The companies employ around 3 million people in the EU-27, more than 1.2 million of them in Germany alone. This makes mechanical and plant engineering the largest employer among the capital goods industries, both in the EU-27 and in Germany. In the European Union, it represents a turnover volume of an estimated 910 billion euros. Around 80 percent of the machinery sold in the EU comes from a manufacturing plant in the single market.
